Upcoming Corktown CDC election deadlines

Dear CDC members and other active Corktown residents,
Greetings on a slushy Friday morning. As chairperson of the Corktown CDC, I'd like to share with you an update on the status of our CDC membership and some specifics of the upcoming April 3, 2012 CDC election, of which neighborhood residents should have already received notification of in the mail during this past week.

Three of our member's terms expire on April 30: Dorothy Bennick and Mark and Diane Hansknecht. We have room for six more elected members this time around. We have twelve elected members remaining after the terms of those just mentioned expire. We need at least twelve members to remain an active CDC. There is also a possibility of six more members being "appointed" by the Mayor. As with lots of things happening in the city, I'm not exactly sure if or how that would work these days. The bottom line is that we need at least six candidates to run, preferably more, as we all agreed to at our last meeting in January at the Lager House.

We do have several elected members currently on the Corktown CDC than have not been able to participate in our meetings due to different reasons. If you are one of those members, please indicate by "responding to all" in an e-mail to let us know your intentions on continuing to serve on the Corktown CDC. If we know now of any possible upcoming vacancies of currently-held CDC seats due to your personal time constraints, we can perhaps interest other Corktown residents to get involved with us. To my knowledge, this is where the mayoral appointments to CDC's clause could take effect to fill the void.

I do not have current contact information for Shelley Paros. I would appreciate it if someone could get this CDC election information to her or send me her up-to-date e-mail address.

Our next CDC meeting will be after the upcoming elections. The meeting will be held at 6:30 on Monday, April 16, possible at Nemo's, pending theTigers' schedule, or the new Mercury Burger Bar' if it's up and running. Thisnext meeting will take place after the upcoming CDC election which will be held on Tuesday, April 3, 2012. All those who plan to run with their name appearing on the ballot for the election, must submit a petition with at least 10 neighborhood resident's signatures - who are registered voters in Detroit - to the Detroit Department of Elections office on West Grand Blvd., across from the Fisher Building, by 4:00p.m. on Monday, March 5, 2012. This is a week from this coming Monday. Write-in candidates may still participate in the election if you can't file your petitions by March 5.

Please call me at 313-520-7680 if you need more info about running for the Corktown CDC. It's hard to write and make sense of it all in this short space. I do have copies of a couple petitions that someone could use.

Pass this note forward to any and all who may be interested in this information. The more in the mix, the merrier.

Mark Crowley
